“Daylight PDT” is an effective treatment for sunspots (pre-cancerous and some non-melanoma cancerous skin cells) that involves applying a photosensitising cream to the face and exposing the face to visible light for two hours before washing it off.

Using daylight instead of a concentrated light source means this new PDT is also generally less painful than other similar treatments making it an attractive option for treating and removing your sunspots.

Sunspots (also known as actinic keratoses) are dry patches that occur on sun exposed areas of your skin, these patches come and go and and can be a little bit tender. The most common sites are the face, hands and arms although they can occur anywhere. They have the potential to turn into skin cancer (Squamous Cell Carcinoma or SCC) and therefore should be removed if possible.

After treatment the skin is left pink like a sunburn and will peel over the following week, but in most cases there is less redness, crusting, or erosions that are commonly experienced with other treatment options for sunspots.

People suffering from atopic dermatitis are more prone to contact allergic dermatitis. Symptoms can include red itchy rashes with blisters or pustules. Treatment usually involves medication to settle the reaction and identification and avoidance of the allergen.

Patch Testing: Is an accurate method that involves exposing a wider range of diluted substances to an area of skin over a longer period of time. This testing can identify triggers that may or may not be diagnosed through skin-prick testing and/or pathology testing.

At Lotus Dermatology, our specialists use patch testing to identify allergens causing contact dermatitis. Information from your individual situation and environment with be used to tailor the testing to give the best chance of identifying the cause.

Approximately 3% of the population suffer from hyperhidrosis also known as excessive sweating. Underarm (axillary) hyperhidrosis can be treated with a specialist procedure using injections to the local area containing the botulinum toxin. This treatment uses a natural protein to block the chemical that causes sweating. After treatment it will take 7-14 days for the injections to take full effect and is usually effective for 3 – 9 months.

This treatment is is highly effective and the cost of treatment is now heavily subsidised by Medicare. Treatments can only be administered by a Dermatologist.

Uses a narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) light at the 311-312nm wavelengths to treat a wide range of skin conditions. This is the most suitable and beneficial band of natural light for treating the skin. Lotus Dermatology makes use of a full body light booth and light boxes for treating the hands and feet.

Initial exposure is known as the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED) which ensures no skin redness occurs. Exposure levels increase over time as your skin adjusts to the UVB ensuring best results.

Phototherapy is used to treat inflammatory conditions including:

– psoriasis (red, scaly skin)
– atopic dermatitis (eczema)
– mycosis fungeoides (cutaneous t-cell lymphoma)
– vitiligo (pigment loss)
– prurigo nodularis
– parapsoriasis
– pityriasis lichenoides
– senile pruritus

This treatment is affordable and much safer than other methods.

Omnilux blue and Omnilux red are a relaxing and pain free treatment used to treat mild to moderate acne and other inflammatory skin conditions. By targeting the cells in the sebaceous glands the light stops the production of the bacteria causing the acne and excess oil and promotes your body’s natural healing process.

The Omnilux Blue also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne, leaving your skin clean and healthier.

The duration of treatment is 20 minutes per session. Optimum results will be seen between 4-12 weeks after the course of treatments is complete. Due to the detoxification process of the treatment some people may experience an increase of acne lesions over the course of the treatment period, however this will settle down once treatment is complete. The light stimulates natural processes that continue after the treatment has stopped.

This is not ultraviolet light therapy and does not increase risk of skin cancers. LED light therapy is safe in pregnancy and with children. It is not advisable to have sun bed treatments in conjunction with your course of blue light therapy.
